In every fuel pump, there has to be a fuel pump relay. This fuel pump relay is
responsible for enabling the fuel pump to do its work. As you start your vehicle,
this fuel pump relay ignites the fuel pump to run. The fuel pump relay allows
the ECM to control when the fuel pump is on. There is also an oil pressure switch
that acts as backup to the relay. After the engine is running, the fuel pump relay
will automatically turns off and the current for the fuel pump is supplied via
the oil pressure sending unit.
Unfortunately, this fuel pump relay occasionally fails. The main indication
of a faulty fuel pump relay is that it takes a lot of cranking for the engine
to run. The ECM normally engages the fuel pump for a few seconds when you turn
the ignition on to pressurize the fuel rails. If you don't hear the fuel pump
run for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on, you should suspect there
is a problem with the fuel pump relay.
Replacing the fuel pump relay is very simple. The fuel pump relay is found in
the trunk behind the back seat, on the passenger side. The relay itself is about
1"x1"x2" and is a green color, attached to a black metal housing. It is incorporated
with an Integrated Relay Control Module or IRCM, which is the black metal box
about 4 inches square and 2 inches thick. Back in replacing, simply pull hard
until it detaches from the black housing, and replace with the new relay.
